Owning a BMW X6 M (F86): What the S63 Wears Out First
The X6 M (F86, 2015β2019) is a two-and-a-quarter-tonne coupe-SUV with the S63 twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet. Everything on it works harder than on an ordinary X6: the cooling, the brakes, the suspension, the driveline. That is not a fault β it is the design brief β but it does mean the service list is its own thing. Here is what we see on the X6 Ms we part out in Texas, and the genuine used OEM pieces that settle each one.
1. Cooling is not one system but four
Engine coolant, charge air, engine oil, transmission oil β the S63 runs a separate circuit for each, and every circuit has its own pump, cooler and lines. The first sign of trouble is rarely steam: it is coolant that needs topping up with nothing on the driveway, or a gearbox that shifts lazily when the car is hot. Check the heat exchanger and the auxiliary radiators before assuming the worst about the engine.

2. The turbochargers live in the hottest place on the car
Both turbos sit inside the V of the engine, wrapped in heat shields, fed by coolant lines that keep working after you switch off. Those lines and their seals are the parts that age first: a faint sweet smell after a drive, a slow coolant loss, a stain on the shield. Replacing a hose is a morning; ignoring one is a turbo.

3. The rear rides on air
Like the ordinary X6, the M keeps self-levelling air springs at the back. A car that settles overnight, rises slowly, or throws a chassis warning is usually telling you about a leaking bag β but sensors and the compressor fail on their own and produce the same warning for far less money. Read the ride-height values before ordering anything.

4. Adaptive dampers and the arms around them
The M runs electronically controlled dampers, and they are a wear item like any other: a knock over broken tarmac, a corner that floats, a damper warning after a cold morning. The upper control arms usually go at the same mileage, and doing arms without dampers (or the other way round) tends to bring the car straight back.

5. xDrive: half shafts and the differential brain
Six hundred horsepower reach the road through a front and rear axle that were never asked to do this on an ordinary X6. Half shafts show up as a vibration under power; the rear differential has its own control module, and when it fails the car throws a drivetrain warning that looks far more expensive than it is. Diagnose the module before the diff.

6. Brakes sized for the weight
Stopping this car heats everything: pads, discs, fluid, and the hydraulics behind them. A pedal that goes long when hot, or an ABS light that appears after hard driving, points at the master cylinder and booster rather than the pads. Both are available used and both are far cheaper than the dealer route.

7. F86 is not F16 β check before you order
The X6 M shares its body shell with the ordinary X6, but the M has its own cooling, brakes, suspension, driveline and bumpers. A part listed for an F16 X6 will often physically fit and still be the wrong specification. Send the VIN: we will confirm the M part number before you pay for it.
Cannot find the part you need?
We part out X6 Ms as they arrive, so a piece missing from the site today may already be on the shelf. Send your VIN or call +1 (903) 914-0004 and we will match the exact OEM part for your car. For the non-M version of this chassis see our F16 X6 guide, and for the smaller M SUVs our X4 M and X3 M guide.
