BMW F98 X4 M and X3 M (2020β2025): What Owners Replace First
The F98 X4 M and its F97 X3 M sibling (2020β2025) are the M division applied to a family SUV: the S58 twin-turbo six, adaptive M suspension and brakes sized for a car that weighs two tonnes. They are young enough that most repairs are still first-time repairs, and the list is different from an ordinary X3 β more heat, more load, more electronics. Here is what we see on the ones we part out.
1. The cooling package works for a living
The S58 runs a layered cooling system β engine, charge air, oil and transmission β and every circuit has its own lines and connectors. Oil cooler feed lines and transmission cooler hoses are the ones that seep first, especially on cars that have seen track days or towing. A weep at a fitting is worth catching early; the same leak on a hot manifold is a different kind of morning.

2. Turbochargers and what they tell you
The S58 uses two turbos, front and rear, and they are not interchangeable. Before condemning one, check the charge pipes and the wastegate actuator β a boost fault is more often a leak or an actuator than a failed turbo. When a turbo does have to come off, buying the correct side matters more than the year on the badge.

3. xDrive and the transfer case actuator
The M xDrive system splits torque through a transfer case with an electric actuator. When the actuator motor wears, the car throws a drivetrain warning and may default to a fixed split; the symptom looks alarming and the fix is often just the motor rather than the whole case. Worth diagnosing in that order.

4. Sensors live where the parking knocks land
Radar, cameras and parking sensors sit in the bumpers and mirrors β exactly where a supermarket car park finds them. These are straight swaps with the right part, but they are equipment-specific and need calibration afterwards. A sensor from a differently-optioned car will fit the hole and refuse to code.
5. Interior trim is a real cost
Carbon trim sets, M seats and the M steering wheel are expensive new and hold their value used. If a car has been smoked in, sun-baked or had a seat torn, replacing the piece with a matching used part is usually the difference between a tired interior and a clean one. Match colour and material exactly β the M cars came in several combinations.

6. Buying used parts for a young M car
Because these cars are recent, part numbers changed mid-production more often than on older BMWs. Send us the VIN before you order: we check what your car was actually built with rather than what the model year suggests.
Looking for a part we do not have listed?
We part out X4 Ms as they come through the yard, so if you do not see your piece on the site yet, it may already be on the shelf. Send your VIN or call +1 (903) 914-0004 and we will match the exact OEM part for your BMW before you buy. For the standard X3, see our F25 X3 guide.
