BMW F16 X6 Problem Areas (2015β2019) and the Parts That Solve Them
The F16 X6 (2015β2019) shares its bones with the F15 X5 but carries more weight over the rear axle and more standard equipment. Here is what we see most on the F16s we part out β with genuine used OEM parts from our rust-free Texas yard where we have them, and honest guidance where we do not.
1. Rear suspension arms
A heavy tailgate, a sloping roofline and a lot of curb weight put steady load through the rear multi-link arms. Worn bushings give the same symptoms as on any big BMW SUV: a knock over expansion joints, vague tracking, and rear tyres that wear on one edge. The arms are side-specific, so check left against right before ordering.

2. Self-levelling air suspension at the rear
Many X6s left the factory with rear self-levelling air suspension. When the car sits low on one side overnight, throws a ride-height fault, or the compressor runs long after the doors close, the fault is usually in the air springs, the compressor, or the control module rather than the whole system. Diagnosing which of the three saves a lot of money.
3. Cooling system β hoses, pumps and the N63
The 4.4L N63 in the xDrive50i works hard in a heavy car, and the plastic cooling parts around it age with heat: radiator hoses, the expansion tank, the water pump, and the auxiliary pumps. Coolant that drops slowly with no puddle underneath usually means a hose or a seal on the way out. Catch it before it turns into a heat-soaked engine.
4. Lighting and driver-assist electronics
Adaptive xenon and LED lighting, camera mirrors, park assist and lane-departure hardware are all common on the F16 β and all sit at the front of the car, where the first thing that goes wrong is a knock. Control modules and lamps are usually a straight swap with a matching OEM unit.
5. Tailgate, trim and interior
The powered tailgate, its struts and the trim around it see constant use. So do the seat modules and interior switches in a car this well-equipped. Used OEM keeps the colour, grain and connectors identical, which aftermarket rarely does.
