BMW E88 1 Series Convertible Faults: Roof, Suspension and Electrics

The E88 1 Series Convertible (2008–2013) is the cheapest way into a rear-wheel-drive BMW six, and the cars are now old enough that condition matters more than mileage. Most of what goes wrong is shared with the E90 3 Series, plus the roof mechanism that only the convertible has. Here is the honest list from the E88s we part out in Texas.

1. The roof, and the water that follows it

The folding top has its own hydraulics, motors, microswitches and drain channels. A roof that stops halfway is more often a switch or a blocked drain than a failed pump. Keep the drains clear: water that cannot leave the roof well ends up in the boot and, eventually, in the electronics that live there. The rollover protection system behind the rear seats is part of the same assembly and is worth inspecting on any car that has been stored outside.

2. N52 gaskets: valve cover and oil filter housing

On the 128i, the naturally aspirated N52 is a durable engine with two predictable leaks: the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket. Neither is dramatic, both smell like burning oil at a traffic light, and both are worth doing before the oil reaches the belt. The electric water pump on the same engine is a wear item with a finite life β€” plan for it rather than wait for it.

3. The 135i is a different animal

The turbocharged cars add fuel system hardware the 128i does not have. High-pressure pumps and injectors are the classic talking points; a long crank when hot is the usual first symptom. None of this makes a 135i a bad car β€” it makes a documented service history worth paying for.

4. Cooling: plastic that has had fifteen years

Radiators, expansion tanks and the fan module are all reaching the end of their natural life on these cars. The failure is rarely sudden: a slow loss of coolant, a fan that runs when it should not, a temperature gauge that takes its time. Replacing a tired cooling part with a good used OEM one is cheap next to the alternative on an aluminium engine.

5. Rear suspension and wheel bearings

Rear wheel bearings and the bushings in the rear axle are the usual MOT-season findings. The bearing is pressed into the knuckle, so a complete used knuckle is the quicker route; check the anti-roll bar links at the same time, since a knocking rear end is as often a link as a bearing.

6. Xenon lighting and its ballasts

If your car has xenon headlights, a light that flickers, turns pink or drops out entirely is usually the ballast or the bulb rather than the headlight unit. Test in that order before buying an assembly β€” the ballast is a fraction of the price.

Looking for a part we do not have listed?

We part out E88 convertibles as they come through the yard, so if you do not see your piece on the site yet, it may already be on the shelf. Send your VIN or call +1 (903) 914-0004 and we will match the exact OEM part for your BMW before you buy. Most of the mechanical parts are shared with the E90; see our E90 3 Series guide.
