BMW E90 3 Series (2005–2011): The Repair List Every Owner Meets

The E90 3 Series (2005–2011) is a genuinely fun car to own, but it’s old enough now that a few well-documented failure points come with the territory. Knowing them helps you buy smart, budget right, and get the correct OEM part the first time. Here’s what to watch for.

1. Electric water pump & thermostat

This is the E90’s signature failure. The electric water pump has a finite lifespan and tends to quit without much warning — usually as an overheating message on the dash. The thermostat often goes around the same time. If yours is original and past ~80k miles, treat it as a when-not-if item and replace both with quality OEM units.

2. Oil filter housing & valve cover gasket leaks

Oil weeping from the oil filter housing gasket and the valve cover gasket is extremely common on the N52 and N54 engines. You’ll usually smell burning oil (it drips onto the exhaust) before you see it. Not catastrophic, but left alone it makes a mess and can soak the belt.

3. VANOS & DISA valve

The VANOS (variable valve timing) solenoids can clog and trip codes or cause rough low-end running, and the plastic DISA intake valve is known to wear and, in the worst case, shed parts into the intake. Both are common, well-understood fixes on the E90.

4. Window regulators & interior electronics

Failed window regulators are a classic E90 annoyance — a window that drops or won’t go back up. Switches and comfort modules can also act up with age. These are inexpensive, high-satisfaction fixes with the right OEM part.

5. N54 turbo cars (335i) — a few extras

The twin-turbo 335i is quick and tunable, but keep an eye on the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP), wastegate rattle, and the charge-pipe, which is a known weak point under boost. Budget accordingly if you’re buying a 335i.
