High-Mileage BMW E70 X5 (2007β2013): What Goes Wrong and What to Replace
The E70 X5 (2007β2013) is the generation that made the X5 a workhorse, and there are a lot of them still on the road with high miles. That age is exactly why used OEM makes sense here: the parts that fail are expensive new, and the cars they came from are the same ones you are fixing. Here is what we see most on the E70s we part out β with genuine used OEM parts from our rust-free Texas yard where we have them, and honest guidance where we do not.
1. Rear air suspension
Most E70s came with rear self-levelling air suspension, and after a decade the air springs, the compressor and the control module all become candidates. The tell-tale signs are familiar: the back of the car sits low after a night in the driveway, a ride-height warning appears on start-up, or the compressor keeps running long after everyone has got out. Replacing the failed piece rather than the whole system is what keeps this repair sensible.
2. Transfer case β the xDrive knock
The xDrive transfer case is a known weak point on this chassis. A shudder at low speed, a knock when reversing, or a drivetrain fault on the dash usually points here, and a new unit from the dealer is one of the priciest single parts on the car. A tested used OEM case is the difference between fixing the X5 and moving it on.

3. Cooling system β plastic that ages badly
The expansion tank, the thermostat housing, the water pump and the hoses around them are all plastic, and heat cycles make them brittle. Coolant that quietly disappears with no puddle underneath, a sweet smell after a drive, or a temperature gauge that creeps means it is time to look. Catching this early is far cheaper than the alternative.

4. Powered tailgate and its hardware
The split tailgate, its lift module, struts and lock actuators get used every single day, and on a car this age the motors and latches wear out. These are straightforward swaps once you have the matching OEM part β and matching matters, because the trim and connectors changed through the run.
5. Adaptive xenon headlights
Adaptive xenon lighting was common on the E70, and both the lamps and their control modules fail with age or after a knock. New units are eye-watering; a genuine used OEM lamp with the correct part number restores the beam pattern and the self-levelling without the dealer bill.
6. Confirm the build before you buy
E70s vary by engine, drivetrain and options far more than the model badge suggests, and the 2010 facelift changed a number of parts mid-run. That is why we ask for a VIN rather than a year β it tells us exactly how your X5 left the factory. If you are working on the later F15, our F15 X5 guide covers that generation.
