Running a High-Mileage BMW 7 Series (F01/F02): Where the Money Goes

A used BMW 7 Series (F01 and the long-wheelbase F02, 2009–2015) costs less than a new family hatchback, and that is exactly where people get caught out: the purchase price is small, the running costs belong to the car it used to be. None of what follows makes these cars a bad buy — it is simply the list that decides whether ownership is calm or expensive. 1. The air suspension, and the parts that fail before the springs

The rear axle rides on air, levelled by height sensors and a compressor. A car that sits low overnight, lifts slowly, or throws a suspension warning is usually telling you about a leaking air spring — but the sensors and the control unit fail on their own too, and they produce the same warning light for a fraction of the cost. Diagnose in that order: sensor readings first, then the compressor, then the springs.

2. The N63 V8 lives hot

On the 750i the turbochargers sit inside the V of the engine, which puts the hottest parts of the car in the middle of it. Everything around them ages faster: coolant hoses, the expansion tank, the auxiliary pumps that keep circulating after shutdown. A slow coolant loss with nothing on the driveway is the classic first symptom — the leak evaporates on the manifold before it ever reaches the floor.

3. High-pressure fuel: the long crank you learn to recognise

A hot start that takes an extra second, a stumble when pulling away, a fuel-system fault code stored quietly — that combination points at the high-pressure pump or the injectors. Injectors are sold in index numbers for a reason: the newer index supersedes the older one, and mixing them across a bank is how a running problem turns into a mystery.

4. Turbochargers: check the cheap things first

Low boost is more often a split charge pipe, a tired wastegate actuator or a leaking connection than a failed turbo. When a turbocharger does have to come out, the two sides are not interchangeable, and on the N63 neither is trivial to reach — it is worth being certain before the engine cover comes off.

5. Comfort electronics age faster than the car

Soft-close doors, the powered boot lid, seat modules, the rear climate panel: the 7 Series carries more small motors and modules than any other BMW of its era, and each one is a separate part. The good news is that they fail individually — a door that no longer pulls itself shut is an actuator, not a body repair.

6. F01 or F02? The difference is not only the wheelbase

The long-wheelbase F02 has its own rear doors, rear interior panels, rear seat parts and sunshade hardware — none of it shared with the short-wheelbase F01. Engine and chassis parts usually cross over; anything behind the B-pillar usually does not. If you are ordering rear trim, send the VIN and let us confirm which body the piece came from.
