How to Read a BMW Chassis Code (E, F, G) and Find the Right Part

Every BMW carries an internal chassis code that tells you far more than the marketing name on the trunk lid. A "3 Series" has been built across many generations, and the parts that fit an E90 will not fit an F30 or a G20. If you order by model name and year alone, you will eventually buy the wrong part. Reading the chassis code correctly is the fastest way to avoid returns and comebacks.

What the chassis code actually is

BMW assigns an internal development code to each generation of a platform. That code, not the model name, defines which body panels, suspension components, wiring, and trim will physically fit. The letter prefix roughly tracks the era of the platform:

  • E codes cover most cars from the 1990s through the early 2010s (for example E46, E60, E90).
  • F codes cover the 2010s generation (for example F30, F10, F15).
  • G codes cover the current generation (for example G20, G30, G05).

The number after the letter identifies the specific model and body style. This is why two BMWs that are both called "3 Series" can share almost no sheet metal: one may be an E90 and the other a G20, two completely different platforms.

Reading the code by model line

Here are common examples technicians see on the bench. Use them to translate between the badge on the car and the platform you actually need parts for:

  • 3 Series: E46, then E90/E91/E92/E93, then F30/F31/F34, then G20/G21.
  • 5 Series: E60/E61, then F10/F11, then G30/G31.
  • X5: E70, then F15, then G05.

Notice that a single generation often splits into several body-style codes. Within the E90 generation, the sedan is E90, the wagon is E91, the coupe is E92, and the convertible is E93. Doors, glass, and rear body panels differ between them even though the badge is identical.

Model years and mid-cycle changes

Chassis codes usually span several model years, and BMW frequently introduces a mid-cycle refresh (often called an LCI) partway through a generation. An LCI can change headlights, tail lights, bumpers, and interior electronics while keeping the same core chassis code. When you know both the chassis code and the exact model year, you can tell whether a car is pre-LCI or post-LCI, which matters for lighting and some electronic modules.

The practical rule: the chassis code narrows you to the correct platform, and the model year tells you which running change applies within that platform.

From code to the right part (fitment)

Once you have the chassis code and model year, you have most of what fitment depends on. The remaining variables are engine, drivetrain (RWD versus xDrive), and factory options. A control arm, a headlight, or a transmission can differ based on those. That is why a chassis code alone is a strong starting point but not always the final answer.

The most reliable path is:

  • Identify the chassis code from the car (VIN decode or visual generation cues).
  • Confirm the model year to resolve pre-LCI versus post-LCI.
  • Match the OE part number stamped on the original component whenever possible.

The OE part number is the tie-breaker. When a part carries the same OE number as the one you are replacing, fitment is confirmed regardless of how confusing the model naming gets.

Where to find the code

You can decode the chassis generation from the VIN, and enthusiasts often recognize a generation on sight. But for ordering, treat the VIN and the original part number as the sources of truth. Visual identification gets you close; the numbers confirm it.
