BMW G30 5 Series (2017–2023): Early Failures and What to Order

Aug 18, 2026 Β· Atman Auto Parts

The G30 5 Series (2017–2023) is modern enough that most cars are still on the road and old enough that the first repairs are landing. What breaks here is different from the older BMWs: less rust and worn rubber, more electronics and adaptive hardware. Here is what we see most on the G30s we part out β€” with genuine used OEM parts from our rust-free Texas yard where we have them, and honest guidance where we do not.

1. Adaptive suspension

Many G30s left the factory with adaptive dampers and ride-height sensors. When a damper leaks or a sensor drifts, the car throws a chassis warning, sits unevenly, or gets crashy in comfort mode. The sensors are cheap; the dampers are not β€” but a tested used OEM strut costs a fraction of new, and they are usually replaced in pairs.

2. Body control and BDC modules

The body domain controller runs lighting, locking, comfort access and a long list of small conveniences. When it fails the symptoms look scattered β€” doors that will not lock, lights behaving oddly, comfort access that works when it feels like it β€” and a dealer diagnosis costs more than the part. A matching used OEM unit is the practical fix.

3. Cooling hoses and the expansion tank

Even on a newer chassis the plastic cooling parts age first: radiator hoses, the expansion tank and its connections. Coolant that drops slowly with nothing under the car is the usual first sign. Catching it early keeps the repair to a hose.

4. The 530e hybrid side

Plug-in G30s add hardware the petrol cars do not have: the high-voltage battery wiring, the charging module and the distribution relays. When a 530e refuses to charge or drops the electric mode, the fault is often in one of these rather than in the battery itself β€” worth diagnosing carefully before assuming the worst.

5. Cameras, sensors and driver assistance

Parking sensors, surround-view cameras and assistance modules sit at the corners of the car, where the first parking knock finds them. These are straight swaps with the right OEM part, but the part has to match the equipment level β€” a camera from a differently-optioned car will not code in.

6. Options decide the part, not the badge

Two G30s of the same year can differ in drivetrain, suspension, lighting and infotainment. Send us a VIN and we confirm what your car actually has before you order. For the previous generation, see our F10 5 Series guide.

Looking for a part we do not have listed?

We part out G30s as they come through the yard, so if you do not see your piece on the site yet, it may already be on the shelf. Send your VIN or call +1 (903) 914-0004 and we will match the exact OEM part for your BMW before you buy.
