BMW F34 3 Series Gran Turismo Faults (2014β2019) and Their OEM Fixes
The F34 3 Series Gran Turismo (2014β2019) is the practical odd one out of the F3x family: a longer wheelbase, a hatchback tailgate and more glass than a saloon. Mechanically it shares most of its hardware with the F30, so the engine and chassis wear the same way β but the body, the roof and the powered tailgate bring their own list. Here is what we see most on the GTs we part out, with genuine used OEM parts from our rust-free Texas yard.
1. The panoramic roof and its drains
The GT carries a large glass roof, and the cassette under it has drain channels running down the pillars. Leaves and grit block them, water backs up, and the first sign is usually a damp headliner or a wet footwell rather than a dripping roof. Clearing the drains is maintenance; when the frame, rails or shade mechanism are already damaged, a complete used cassette is far cheaper than the individual pieces.

2. Body control and comfort electronics
Lighting, central locking, comfort access and the powered tailgate all answer to the front body module. When it fails, the symptoms scatter: doors that lock at random, lights that behave oddly, a tailgate that opens when it feels like it. Diagnosis at a dealer usually costs more than the module itself, and a matching used unit coded to your car is the practical fix.

3. Rear wheel bearings and knuckles
The GT is heavier than the saloon and carries more of that weight over the rear axle. Rear wheel bearings are the usual consequence: a hum that rises with speed and changes when you lean the car into a bend. The bearing is pressed into the knuckle, so a complete used knuckle with a good bearing saves the press work and the guesswork.

4. Cooling: plastic first, metal later
On the N20 and N26 cars the cooling system is mostly plastic β thermostat housing, hose connectors, expansion tank. They go brittle with heat cycles and crack at the seams, usually losing coolant slowly with nothing visible on the driveway. If the fan runs hard or the temperature needle wanders, look at the fan module as well: it is a controlled unit and fails electrically as often as mechanically.

5. Early N20 timing chains
The early four-cylinder N20 cars have a well-documented timing chain concern; BMW revised the parts on later engines. If you are buying a high-mileage GT, listen for a rattle on cold start and check the service history for chain work. It does not make the car a bad buy β it makes the history worth reading.
6. The tailgate is not a boot lid
The powered tailgate has its own drive, struts, latch and sensors, and the parts are not shared with the F30 saloon. When ordering, make sure the piece is listed for the Gran Turismo specifically β the same year and engine badge is not enough.
